About the Documentation centre

Welcome to the Documentation Centre of the International Council on Monuments and Sites!

The ICOMOS Documentation Centre specializes in cultural heritage, historic monuments and sites, their conservation and restoration, with 40.000 titles concerning most countries in the world, 400 periodicals received regularly by exchange, 25.000 slides,

The specialized bibliographical collections include among others documents about archaeology, conservation and restoration techniques, cultural landscapes, cultural routes, cultural tourism, types of architecture (earthen, wooden, vernacular…), historic gardens and parks, historic towns and villages, industrial heritage, rock art, heritage at risk, inventories, legislation on cultural heritage.

The ICOMOS Documentation Centre is the primary repository for the original documentation of the cultural and mixed (natural and cultural) properties that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1978. These documents constitute its most important collection. 

History of the Documentation Centre

The Documentation Centre was created in 1965 when the statutes of the organization provided for the establishment of an International Documentation Centre on the conservation and restoration of architectural heritage. This was done at the initiative of UNESCO.
