New Focal point for the ICOMOS Working Group on Indigenous Heritage (2025-2027)

Kirstine Møller Gray: Focal Point IHWG

ICOMOS is pleased to announce that Dr. Kirstine Møller Gray has been appointed as the new ICOMOS Focal Point to coordinate the Indigenous Heritage Working Group (IHWG) for the period 2025-2027.

Dr. Kirstine Møller Gray is a PhD fellow at the Greenland National Museum & Archives and Memorial University of Newfoundland, focusing on ethical archaeology, decolonisation practices, and community-based heritage management.
As a Kalaaleq Inuk heritage professional, she has an extensive background in Indigenous heritage research, museum curation, cultural policy, and conservation planning. With over a decade of experience in the field, her professional journey has been deeply rooted in the study and preservation of Indigenous heritage.

The formation of the Indigenous Heritage Working Group within ICOMOS has been an evolving process, gaining momentum following the passing of several Indigenous heritage-related resolutions at the General Assembly in Sydney in 2023. These resolutions highlighted the growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous perspectives and practices in heritage conservation, necessitating the creation of a dedicated working group to better address these concerns.

The Focal Point of the Indigenous Heritage Working Group is a newly established volunteer position, with Dr. Kirstine Møller Gray playing a pivotal role in guiding the group’s efforts. She will lead the development of a comprehensive work plan aligned with ICOMOS’ broader strategic initiatives, facilitate and coordinate Indigenous heritage-related activities, and collaborate closely with the Working Group’s Task Team Coordinators, the ICOMOS Board, and Headquarters. Additionally, she will engage with ICOMOS entities to ensure coherence, foster collaborations with external stakeholders, and support the implementation of relevant General Assembly resolutions.

Appointed for three years, the Focal Point will also oversee a smooth transition at the end of their term. Her leadership will ensure that the group’s activities are cohesive and impactful, and reflect the diverse needs and concerns of Indigenous communities worldwide.
