America Group

ICOMOS’ America Group covers all of the American Continent, including both North and Latin America, as well as the Caribbean. As such, it covers a diverse cultural, linguistic and geographic region, including mainly-Anglophone countries as well as Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. Across the Americas there are 22 ICOMOS National Committees, which cooperate bilaterally, multilaterally, on both sub-regional and regional levels. These Committees, and the America Group as a whole, participate actively in ICOMOS’ global activities, playing a major role on numerous International Scientific Committees.

The America Group is currently represented on the ICOMOS Board by Mr Leonardo Castriota (Brazil), elected as Vice President of the ICOMOS Bureau at the 2023 General Assembly.

What is the America Group’s role?

The America Group holds both an annual meeting and a biannual scientific symposium, hosted by a different ICOMOS National Committee on a rotating basis, as well as a working meeting during ICOMOS General Assemblies.

The group’s main objectives are:

  • To link and relate actions between the region’s ICOMOS National Committees;
  • To give visibility to the diverse cultural heritage of the Americas;
  • To strengthen relationships with other regions.
