Africa Group

ICOMOS’ Africa Group covers the 46 countries of the African continent, a region which is rich and diverse in terms of culture, nature and geography, both tangible and intangible.
The area currently covered by the Africa Group includes 15 countries with their own National Committees, and 11 other countries with individual members but without National Committees. Certain African countries are part of the ICOMOS Arab State Group.

The Africa Group is currently represented on the ICOMOS Board by Ms Chilangwa Chaiwa (Zambia), elected as Vice President of the ICOMOS Bureau at the 2023 General Assembly.

What is the Africa Group’s role?

The Africa Group holds quarterly regional meetings, including one held during the ICOMOS General Assembly. The group is also engaged in various events on national and regional levels, as well as scientific conferences, mainly organised by ICOMOS National Committees.

The activities of the ICOMOS Africa Group are mainly organised by ICOMOS National Committees and are based on common priorities and objectives that have been identified together. These aims are currently:

  • To increase the number of both ICOMOS National Committees and ICOMOS members in the region;
  • To give greater representation to African experts in cultural heritage internationally;
  • To strengthen risk preparedness and response mechanisms for disasters and conflicts.
