Welcome to the Africa Group section of ICOMOS International
The Africa Region is comprised of forty six (46) countries [1], fifteen (15) of which currently have National Committees [2]. There are also individual members in eleven (11) countries where National Committees have not yet been created [3].*
The Group is represented on the ICOMOS Board by Ms Chilangwa Chaiwa from Zambia, elected as Vice-President of the ICOMOS Bureau during the 21st ICOMOS General Assembly in 2023 in Sydney (Australia).
The Group is engaged in various activities mainly organised by the National Committees and based on identified common priorities and objectives.
Africa is a rich continent with a diverse heritage, whether cultural or natural, tangible or intangible. Consequently, the objectives of the Africa Group are:
- To increase the number of ICOMOS members and National Committees in the region
- To have a greater representation of African experts involved in cultural heritage activities on the international scene ;
- To strengthen risk preparedness and response mechanisms for disasters and conflicts.
