Since its launch in Glasgow in 2019, the Climate Heritage Network has achieved numerous milestones, and is announcing today the members of its Steering Committee for 2022-24. As a founding member and its Secretariat, ICOMOS has been working with the CHN to mobilise art, culture and heritage for climate action.

ICOMOS is continuing its support of the Climate Heritage Network in its dual role of Secretariat and CHN sustaining member. As Secretariat, ICOMOS contributes to the exchange of information among CHN members regarding culture-based climate action and to the development and promotion of tools to mainstream culture into international climate policy. ICOMOS also guided the network in its successful Voluntary Membership fees campaign in 2021 and will continue to do so in 2022.

ICOMOS members and the Climate Heritage Network participated in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) by contributing to heritage-related events and the G20 in an effort to amplify cultural voices on climate issues. In 2021, ICOMOS and the Climate Heritage Network both contributed to CVI-Africa, a project to support climate action in Africa through cultural heritage and pilot the first application of the Climate Vulnerability Index methodology in Africa.

In November 2021, the CHN hit two more milestones: it completed its two-year Madrid-to-Glasgow Action plan and held its first Co-Chair elections. Today, the Climate Heritage Network is announcing the members of the Network’s Steering Committee for 2022-24.

The new CHN Steering Committee members represent public and governmental bodies from local, regional and national levels; universities; museums, heritage sites, libraries, and other cultural institutions; Indigenous People’s organisations; civil society/NGOs; climate science; and artists and creative and design firms. They are drawn from all the CHN’s five regions: Africa and the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe and CIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America.

ICOMOS looks forward to continuing in our role as Secretariat of the CHN and supporting the growing network of arts, culture and heritage voices and other stakeholders that are united in climate action.
