ICOMOS becomes part of the ECHOES consortium for the creation of a Collaborative European Cloud for Cultural Heritage

ECHOES Project ICOMOSThe European Cloud for Heritage Open Science (ECHOES) project, led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), aims to establish a European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) as a shared platform for heritage professionals and researchers to access data, innovative scientific and training resources and advanced digital tools co-developed by the cultural heritage community.

ICOMOS is part of the project's consortium of 51 public and private cultural heritage field actors working towards the implementation of this digital ecosystem.

The ECHOES project won the Horizon Europe 2023 call "A European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage" and has been awarded €25 million for 5 years of work (2024 – 2029).

This project aims to unite fragmented communities in the field of cultural heritage to promote a paradigm shift through a holistic approach. ECHOES intends to facilitate the digitisation of both tangible and intangible heritage assets, enabling stakeholders to develop their own analysis and interpretation of this heritage in order to contribute to the production of a collective corpus of knowledge. The European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage is based on the principles of Open Access and Open Science, promoting inclusivity and easy access to scientific knowledge.

ECHOES seeks to promote the emergence of Digital Commons through this ecosystem. To develop the project, the CNRS, together with the CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy) and the FSP (Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine), formed a consortium of 51 European partners, including research organisations, networks representing heritage communities (museums, libraries, archives, restoration, etc.), universities and private sector companies.

As a partner, ICOMOS will contribute to 7 Work Packages related to communication, community building, capacity building and training, cloud environment and digital commons knowledge base, vertical applications and cloud assessment framework.
