From Friday 11 to Saturday 12 June 2021 in Lithuania, the InnovaConcrete project (Innovative materials and techniques for the conservation of 20th-century concrete-based cultural heritage) organises a two-day virtual and international conference questioning the monumental nature of concrete heritage of the post-war era.

ICOMOS ISC20C initiates this InnovaConcrete workshop as a field for debate whether the structures belonging to Brutalism can and should remain for future generations as a relevant part of our history.

This event will discuss the nature of post-war concrete heritage and whether or not these buildings can be considered as monuments. Organised at the 9th Forth Museum Kaunas in Lithuania, the conference will gather the ICOMOS ISC20C Working Group, professors from the Kaunas University of Technology and members from the Kauno Ix Forto Muziejus. Other panelists, coming from all around the world, will share specific analysis, case studies and theories about the conservation and representation strategies for the concrete-based cultural heritage.

The InnovaConcrete project aims to promote innovative solutions for the conservation of 20th century cultural heritage, especially concrete-built heritage, utilizing nanotechnologies. It is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme.

The ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage (ISC20C) is among the 29 partners of this project and will deliver a benchmark guidance document on the approaches to the conservation and management of concrete heritage.
