ICOMOS Culture-Nature Prize 2024 Winners
The ICOMOS 2024 Culture–Nature Prize, supported by a €15,000 fund from the 2022 Giving Tuesday Campaign, aims to recognise initiatives that bridge cultural and natural heritage. The prize emphasises impact, community engagement, and innovation, selecting winners from a total of 39 applications submitted between 23 April and 16 June, 2024.
This year, a total of 39 applications were submitted. A distinguished jury including Steve Brown (former President of the International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes, ISCCL), Chilangwa Chaiwa (ICOMOS Vice-president), Maya Ishizaya (International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes, ISCCL), Hossam Mahdy (President of the International Scientific Committee on Vernacular Architecture, CIAV), and Nupur Prothi (ICOMOS Board member), was responsible for evaluating the submissions.
An honorable mention was awarded posthumously to Comlanvi Zohou from ICOMOS Togo for his project documenting traditional food preservation practices in Togo. His project was shortlisted and acknowledged with this mention for its invaluable contribution, although it did not receive the main Prize. This recognition honors his commitment and legacy in cultural heritage preservation.
The 3 winning projects are the following:
- Kevin Lane (ICOMOS Argentina) for the "Past Water Futures" project on pre-Hispanic dam rehabilitation in Peru.
- Hamdy El Setouhy (ICOMOS member from Egypt) for establishing the Natural Culture Development Nucleus for the Al-Nazlah Revival Complex in Egypt.
- Annisa Rahma Amadea (ICOMOS Indonesia) for preserving WWII Japanese shipwrecks on Sangihé Island, Indonesia.
These Prize-winning projects reflect ICOMOS’ commitment to an integrated approach that connects cultural and natural heritage. They emphasise the importance of community involvement and innovation in sustainable preservation.
By honoring these initiatives, the ICOMOS Culture–Nature Prize supports efforts that celebrate diversity, build community resilience, and protect heritage for future generations, setting an inspiring example for positive change in heritage preservation worldwide.
