ICOMOS at MONDIACULT 2022 World Conference

Actions Today Poster EN copyICOMOS was present at the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development that was held in Mexico City from 28 to 30 September 2022. This conference was focused on embarking on new priorities for the cultural sector that is fully anchored to perspectives of sustainable development and integrated with the new realities affecting the sector brought forth by the climate crisis and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. On this occasion, ICOMOS delivered a statement on six issues to deal with in future cultural policies: read it in English, French and Spanish.

In attendance were ICOMOS Secretary General, Mario Santana together with ICOMOS Focal Point for the UN SDGs, Gabriel Caballero and ICOMOS Mexico President, Saul Alcantara Onofre. Several other members of ICOMOS Mexico and the Sustainable Development Goals Working Group was also in attendance: Maria Guadalupe Zepeda, Yoloxochitl Lucio, Olga Orive, Fernando Chiapa, Bretony Colville, Olimpia Nglio, Francesca Giliberto, and James Reap.

ICOMOS has been actively engaged in the Mondiacult 2022 process since December 2021 and various members participated in the five regional consultations. ICOMOS has also organised or participated in ResiliArt debates and other important discussions for the past year.

On 26 September 2022, ICOMOS had its concluding discussion at the third part of the ICOMOS - Mondiacult 2022 Culture Forum entitled, "Actions Today: Innovating Culture and Heritage Policies and Practice for Sustainable Development". This was a discussion providing both conceptual framework and practical examples showing how culture and heritage contribute to sustainable development and the achievement of the United Nation's Global Goals. ICOMOS also shared its report documenting regional perspectives, highlighting emerging issues, identifying tested solutions and sharing aspirations of ICOMOS members on the future of culture and heritage policies.
