#StandTogetherNow: ICOMOS calls for bolder action on sustainable development
ICOMOS joined activist NGOs and individuals calling for bold action from governments on sustainable development issues including climate, inequality and freedom of expression, during the 2019 review of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the High-Level Political Forum that took place between July 9-18 in New York.
Shaming the States' inaction
Numerous organisations have issued a new declaration signed by ICOMOS,“Stand Together Now for a Just, Peaceful and Sustainable World”, stating: “We are standing alongside many others around the world in calling out a state of emergency. Humanity cannot afford to wait, people are demanding transformative change, and we are not willing to accept the current lack of action and ambition from many governments.”
ICOMOS is a member of the NGOs Major Group, one of the UN Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) representing non-state actors in the UN system. The call for action, #StandTogetherNow was organized through the NGO MG, with broad participation of civil society actors with diverse agendas, but all converging on the need for better implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
The NGO Major Group Position Paper for the HLPF2019 makes references to cultural heritage, cultural diversity, cultural rights and cultural resilience, among other related themes. We thank the NGO MG coordinators for facilitating our voice to be heard through this important document addressing the UN system.
