The conference aimed to provide an international platform to support African indigenous and local communities and heritage professionals, foster networking, and promote the implementation of strategies to enhance global knowledge of the region’s heritage defined from an African perspective.

Publication of the First Issue of the SOURCES Journal

Revue SOURCESThe first issue of the journal "SOURCES" dedicated to Burkinabé cultural heritage professionals was released last month. SOURCES was created in 2023 and is directed by the Association des Professionnels de Musée du Burkina Faso (APM/BF). Its publication is supported by ICOM and ICOMOS National Committees of Burkina Faso.

Conference - Heritage for Climate Resilience and Renaissance in Africa

WEBSITE ARTICLE THUMBNAILSThis year, African World Heritage Day was celebrated to highlight the role and significance of heritage in improving climate resilience across African communities.

Emerging researchers from 32 countries within and outside of Africa collaborated with the University of Lincoln, UK, and the British Academy Early Career Researchers Network (BA-ECRN) to organise a conference on ‘Heritage for Climate Resilience and Renaissance in Africa: Critical Engagements for Transformative Futures’ on 9 May 2024.

Celebration of the African World Heritage Day - ICOMOS EPWG & ICCROM webinar

AfricanWorldHeritageDay_CelebrationIn celebration of African World Heritage Day, celebrated each year since its establishment at the 38th UNESCO General Assembly in 2015, the ICOMOS Emerging Professionals Working Group for the Africa region (ICOMOS EPWG Africa) partnered with ICCROM through its Youth.Heritage.Africa (YHA) programme to organise a webinar on 5 May.

Entitled "Heritage and youth: climate action, entrepreneurship and digital technologies", this webinar gave voice to 4 young African professionals behind inspiring initiatives to promote African cultural heritage.

Celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites in Africa

IDMSAfrica EventRecapENGSince its inception in 1982 by ICOMOS and its adoption the same year by the UNESCO General Conference, the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS) has taken place every year on April 18. Celebrated throughout the world, this day represents an opportunity to promote and celebrate the importance of cultural heritage. 

The theme of this year's event (2024) was "Disasters and conflicts through the lens of the Venice Charter". Africa was no exception. ICOMOS is pleased to highlight four activities that took place on the continent on this occasion.
