Publication of the First Issue of the SOURCES Journal
The first issue of the journal "SOURCES" dedicated to Burkinabé cultural heritage professionals was released last month. SOURCES was created in 2023 and is directed by the Association des Professionnels de Musée du Burkina Faso (APM/BF). Its publication is supported by ICOM and ICOMOS National Committees of Burkina Faso.
About the association
The "Association des Professionnels de Musée du Burkina Faso" (APM/BF, Association of Burkina Faso Museum Professionals)was founded in 2012 and has around 80 members, all active in the Burkinabé National Comittees of ICOM and ICOMOS. It works to promote museums and encourages in situ conservation of movable cultural heritage assets. In addition, the APM/BF and ICOM Burkina Faso actively supported the creation of the ICOMOS Burkina Faso National Committee, which was officially accredited on 9 September 2022. From the beginning, the organisation's ambition was to create a professional journal dedicated to the cultural heritage of Burkina Faso and Africa. The journal S.O.U.R.C.E.S. was born out of this idea, with the aim of promoting and enhancing the work of African cultural heritage professionals.
History and aims of the journal
The journal was launched on 18 May 2024 as a conclusion to the second edition of Heritage Month, celebrated between 18 April and 18 May in Burkina Faso. In this first issue dedicated to the memory of Toumani TRIANDE, one of the pioneers of museology in Burkina Faso, local professionals express their insights on a number of subjects related to museums and heritage in general. 9 articles are addressing a variety of issues linked to the relationship between museums and cultural heritage, memory, sustainability, illicit trafficking, law, heritage development and tourism. Six out of nine articles were submitted by members of the ICOMOS Burkina Faso National Committee.
The journal's reading committee consists of 7 heritage professionals and members of ICOM and/or ICOMOS from Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal:
Professor Jean-François FAU (France-Egypt), Dr. DIOP (Mali), Dr. Oumarou NAO (Burkina Faso), Dr. Ishanlosen ODIAUA (Nigeria/United States), Dr. Vincent SEDOGO (Burkina Faso), Alyssa K. BARRY (Senegal) and Jean-Paul KOUDOUGOU (Burkina Faso).
The coordinating team would be delighted to receive contributions from across the continent on subjects related to African cultural heritage for future issues of the journal.
