Since June, record monsoon rains and unprecedented flash floods in Pakistan have caused mounting casualties, especially among the most vulnerable, displaced millions, devastated homes, livelihoods, infrastructure, crops and livestock. An estimated 1/3 of the country is under water, with over 30 million people affected. The authorities of Pakistan have requested support from the international community in facing this overwhelming humanitarian catastrophe.

CHARTER (Cultural Heritage Actions to Refine Training, Education and Roles), is an Erasmus+ project, which started in January 2021 and will end in December 2024. It is led by a Consortium of 21 full members including ICOMOS and its International Scientific Committee CIF (International Scientific Committee on Training), 7 affiliate partners and 19 associate members from 14 EU states. ICOMOS is proud to be the co-leader of CHARTER’s Work Package 2, together with ECCO (European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers' Organisations).

ICOMOS and ICCROM undertook a joint mission to Ukraine from 9 to 16 July 2022 in order to provide support to the efforts made by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, as well as heritage organisations and professionals in the country, in the current conflict situation.

The purpose of the mission was to assess the damage caused to cultural heritage, to identify immediate needs, and to offer technical assistance for the preparation of a systematic and coordinated national strategy for first aid interventions and recovery planning of cultural heritage.

On Sunday 31 July, the northern block of the Beirut Grain Silos collapsed. A fire at its foot, seemingly triggered by remaining grain fermenting due to the summer heat, had been left to smoulder for over 20 days, with first minimal interventions to attempt to contain it apparently only taking place after 10 days following widespread protest and calls for action by civil society. This section of the silos had been tipping since the explosion in 2020, and could probably have been saved if timely action had been taken, but the fires further deteriorated the structure hastening its collapse.
