ICOMOS offers its expertise to Colombian heritage authorities

Following decades of extensive searches, the San Jose, heralded as the ‘holy grail’ of shipwrecks, was discovered in 2015. Subsequent underwater surveys revealed strong evidence supporting the claim that the wreck of the Spanish galleon had been located. In April of this year calls for interest in the project to recover the wreck’s cultural material were sent to various heritage bodies, including ICOMOS.

The Modern Movement, also referred to as Modern Architecture or Modernism, is a movement involving conceptualizations of architecture after the First World War. Its main steps are based on functionalism and rationalism.

Call for Session Proposals - deadline extended to 15 May! 

The ICOMOS Annual General Assembly and Advisory Committee meetings (with all the associated parts) will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 4 to 8 December 2018, on the generous invitation of ICOMOS Argentina.

The meetings will be accompanied by a one-day Scientific Symposium on the theme of “Sustainability: Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development” organised by the Advisory Committee. The Symposium will take place on 7 December in La Plata (very close to Buenos Aires).

ICOMOS is pleased to share its discussion paper on the “Evaluations of World Heritage Nominations related to Sites Associated with Memories of Recent Conflicts”

This discussion paper complements the studies initiated by the World Heritage centre working groups on the interpretation of sites of memory (not confined to World Heritage properties) and the use of criterion (vi). It offers an ICOMOS perspective on evaluation of sites associated with the memories of recent conflicts in relation to the World Heritage Convention. It considers how the World Heritage Committee has considered such sites in the past, and the issues that they raise in relation to Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) and the idea of commonality.

ICORP - the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Risk Preparedness - is proud to launch its "On the Road" Initative - which will showcase inspiring stories by professionals and local communities from around the world about post disaster response and recovery of cultural heritage through Documentaries, ‘Campfire Talks’ and Exhibitions.

The pilot episode is dedicated to the April 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal, which besides its heavy human toll severly affected the heritage sites of the Kathmandu valley. The team is leaving for Nepal on 18 April - International Day for Monuments and Sites - follow their progress through their social media channels!
